Born at Basford, Nottingham and lived at 28 Wilton Terrace Wallace Street, Old Basford. Son of John and Elizabeth Elwis, of 811, Hucknall Road, Old Basford, Nottingham. He was a platelayer on the Great Northern Railway prior to enlisting at Nottingham. he went to France 27th August 1915 and died of wounds 18th April 1916, aged 28.
