Born in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Son of Thomas Ellis and husband of Annie Ellis, of Redhill, Arnold, Nottinghamshire. Was a coal miner. He enlisted at Derby 7th December 1914 and went to France 29th August 1915. He sustained gunshot wounds to the head 17th June 1916 and was treated at the 8th Casualty Clearing Station. He was then taken to 13th General Hospital 7th July 1916 and transferred to England via hospital ship (H.S. Jan Breydal). He died of his wounds 16th July 1916, aged 30, in the County of London War Hospital, Epsom, Surrey.

Buried: Redhill Cemetery, Arnold, Nottinghamshire.
