Born at Hunslet, Leeds, Yorkshire. Son of Thomas and Emma M. Byfleet, of 6, Chapel Street, Whittington Moor, Derbyshire. He was a Moulder prior to enlisting on 30th April 1914 at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He went to France on 28th February 1915 and suffered gunshot wounds to his left hand on the 21st of August 1915. He was treated at 24 General Hospital, Etaples, France and rejoined his Battalion on the 7th October 1915. He was wounded on the 1st July 1916 in the attack on Gommecourt, France on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and died of wounds on 3rd July 1916.
